Budget 'VIP' night buses sold by agents on Khao San Road and other backpacker areas to southern islands or Chiang Mai are operated by companies with a history of luggage theft. During overnight travel, staff or accomplices access the luggage hold and go through bags, stealing electronics, cash, and valuables. Victims discover the theft only at arrival. The bus companies are difficult to hold accountable because they operate under frequently changing names. Some buses also make unnecessary stops at remote restaurants where overpriced food is the only option, and additional charges appear at ferry connections.
