In tourist areas, on beaches, and near temples, individuals or small groups approach tourists with photo albums, laminated cards, or children in tow, asking for donations to support orphanages, hill tribe schools, tsunami relief, animal shelters, or sick children. Many of these are not connected to any legitimate charity. The money goes directly to the collector. Some use real photos of children in need but pocket the donations. Others set up fake websites with donation pages. In Chiang Mai, the 'hill tribe children' approach is particularly common. Legitimate charities do not usually send people to solicit donations on the street from tourists.
