In tourist areas, some police officers (both real and fake) stop tourists and cite minor or invented infractions: jaywalking, not carrying your passport, smoking in a non-smoking zone, or littering. They then demand an on-the-spot cash fine of 1,000-5,000 THB to 'settle it here' and avoid 'going to the station.' Real fines are usually 200-2,000 THB and should come with an official receipt. Some officers specifically target tourists because they are unlikely to know the rules or contest the fine. In some cases, the person is not even a real police officer. This is most common in Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket nightlife areas.
